BOOK REPORT: Earthing.  Clinton Ober, Stephen Sinatra MD, and Martin Zucker, 2010.  Available at www.earthing.com

OUR SUMMARY:

An electrical connection exists between the Earth and us (and, of course, every creature on the planet).  Why?  The Earth is a 6,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (6 sextillion) metric ton battery recharged by solar radiation, thousands of lightning strikes per minute, and heat from its molten-core (Ober et al 3).  As a battery, the planet continually generates natural energy frequencies by means of free electron motion (Ober et al 5).  Free electrons are negatively-charged subatomic particles that produce current, and the body, composed mostly of water and minerals, is highly conductive.  In contact with the Earth, the body’s bioelectric systems -- heart-blood pump, brain respiration, sodium-potassium pump (governs movement of nutrients into and waste out of cells), autonomic nervous system, immune system, hormonal system and circadian cycles, etc. --  naturally synchronize with the frequencies of the Earth.  Again, bioelectric functions of the body are naturally normalized by the stabilizing current of the Earth.  Grounded, the body is protected against electrical interference and static electrical charge buildup, as is any piece of sensitive technology (computers, refrigerators, medical equipment, etc.) 

The soles of our feet have about 1,300 nerve endings per square inch (Ober et al 18).  Barefoot or clad in leather, Earth’s free electron current flows naturally from Earth to us, and our bioelectrical systems are synchronized via contact with the planet-battery.  Think how healthy and vital we feel, how well we sleep, on vacation along the shoreline with our bodies in constant contact with the earth through our skin and the soles of our bare feet.  Or how we feel after gardening or wandering barefoot over warmed summer grass.  Get the idea?

Wearing rubber soled shoes and generally living inside our insulated buildings, air conditioned and heated, with many of our workplaces hermetically sealed by windows that don’t open, we are separated from Earth energy for much of the year.  Our conductive bodies become electrically stressed - especially if we experience no exercise or if our diets are heavily compromised by lack of water intake and excess ingestion of white flour, white sugar, transfats, chemically altered or highly processed foods, weight loss products like aspartame, etc., a diet that generally promotes inflammation.  Let’s face it.  We build up a positive static charge on the body just by walking on the omnipresent carpet, wearing synthetic clothing, sitting on fabric-covered furniture, driving in our cars, and sharing space with computers and other appliances, with cell phone technology, microwave technology, WIFI, etc.  When a body, like an appliance, is grounded, it is more protected against interferences that disturb internal circuitry. 

The following list is from Earthing, pages 10-11.  Consider sleeping grounded on earthing sheets woven with a grid of conductive silver strands or placing your bare feet on a grounding pad while you work on a computer if you think you need to:

  • Improve/eliminate symptoms of inflammation-related disorders
  • Reduce/eliminate chronic pain and inflammation (electron deficiency)
  • Improve sleep quality
  • Lower stress by balancing the autonomic nervous system
  • Normalize the body’s biological rhythms
  • Improve blood pressure and flow
  • Relieve muscle tension and headaches
  • Speed healing
  • Reduce/eliminate jet lag
  • Protect your body against EMF’s
  • Resynchronizes cortisol secretion (naturally highest at 8am and lowest at midnight) (Ober 44)
  • Increase melatonin production.

In Earthing’s testimonial section (the entire final third of the book), people also report significant improvement of the following conditions: allergies, skin problems, incontinence and frequent nocturnal urination, arthritis and joint pain/swelling, migraines, depression, anxiety, infection, back pain, chronic fatigue, hypertension, mental fog, snoring, hot flashes, EMF sensitivities, MS suffering, sleep apnea, and poor circulation.  Keep in mind that their experiences will not necessarily reflect yours.
